You will enjoy the walk to the top of Telegraph Hill where you will find the 210 foot tall Coit Tower, built by Lillie Hitchcock Coit in admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires. The tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. From the tower there is a stunning view of the city, San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz island. After viewing the tower it is delightful to walk down the Greenwich Steps to Montgomery Street, then turn right and continue down the Filbert Steps which lead to Sansome and Filbert streets. The walk down the steps will take you past beautiful cottages and private gardens for a truly memorable San Francisco experience.
San Francisco's City Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, and the War Memorial Opera House are just down the street about seven blocks! You will also find many nice restaurants, cafes and galleries in the local area. Check out the SF Chronicle's Hayes Valley info and HayesValleyShop.com as well as the sfstation.com
The Palace of Fine Arts is probably one of the most beautiful spots in San Francisco. It was created for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 and its Roman ruin theme has delighted visitors ever since. Also, if you have children they would probably enjoy The Exploratorium which provides many interesting science exhibits.
If you're an animal lover then you will enjoy the San Francisco Zoo. We especially like the flamingos.
Cable cars are a true San Francisco treat! To reach the cable cars it's best to take the MUNI subway to the Powell Street station. You might also find it fun to stop at the Cable Car Museum
Although you will not find a great deal of fishing going on it is still fun to visit the Fisherman's Wharf area for the fun shows, good food, and the aquarium. From Fisherman's Wharf you can also take a Blue and Gold Fleet ferry to the famous prison at Alcatraz Island
No visit to San Francisco would be complete without a look at the famous Golden Gate Bridge - often referred to as the largest piece of art deco in the world. If you are driving to the Golden Gate Bridge you may want to stop in at the Palace of Fine Arts (see above) on the way.
Modeled after the Palais de la Legion d'Honneur in Paris, San Francisco's Legion of Honor displays a collection of 4,000 years of ancient and European art. Also, after you have had enough art go for a little walk just to the West of the museum and enjoy some absolutely stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Art lovers will also want to visit Golden Gate Park and see the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park which has recently been rebuilt. While at the de Young you will also want to walk accross the street and enjoy the wonderful new (opened October 2008) California Academy of Sciences to enjoy the aquarium, planetarium and natural sciences museum.
San Francisco is a town which you can enjoy on foot. Most of our guests enjoy walking around the Chinatown and North Beach areas to take in the sites, the great food, the architecture and the scenic views. Don't forget to stop at Lombard Street - the most crooked street in the world!
If you want to experience something very beautiful, tranquil and relaxing plan to spend one day or possibly several days in the Napa Valley area to the North of San Francisco. Most people prefer to drive however the Wine Train is also an excellent way to get a feel for the region and visit some of the wineries.
